Exploring Printful: An In-Depth Review of Print on Demand Services
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Printful
Recently, I set out to investigate various print-on-demand services to establish a sticker shop. This venture has long been on my radar, so I designed a few stickers and ordered samples from four providers: RedBubble, Society6, Printful, and Zazzle. This review is the third in a series, focusing specifically on Printful. If you're interested in my objectives for this shop, feel free to check the first part of the series. In short, I aim to create lightweight stickers for decorating planners and journals, ideally featuring thin kiss-cut outlines and themed collections on a single sheet.
Chapter 2: Print Quality
When it comes to print quality, Printful stands out as the best option. I was incredibly pleased with the results; the prints exhibited sharp lines and vibrant colors without any blurriness or pixelation. While I believe I could have slightly reduced the size of the smaller stickers, overall, I am satisfied since they closely resemble my original designs.
Printful also allows for customization of the sticker backgrounds, enabling the creation of a well-styled sticker sheet. Although I didn’t incorporate this feature for my sample order, I see the potential for adding decorative elements or branding, which could enhance the overall presentation.
However, it's worth noting that Printful currently lacks options for transparent stickers or other specialized materials. They do offer a variety of products, including custom-embroidered clothing, which is an exciting addition.
Chapter 3: Sticker Material
The material used for the stickers is thin and user-friendly. Both the stickers and the sheets have a glossy finish; unfortunately, there isn’t a matte or transparent alternative available right now.
Section 3.1: Peeling and Kiss Cut
The kiss cuts on these stickers are impressively uniform. Although the specifications suggest a 3mm edge, the stickers I received had closer to a 2mm edge, which I found to be quite favorable. The stickers detached smoothly from the sheet without any hassle.
Chapter 4: Costs and Shop Management
For my order from Printful, I selected two sticker sheets: one measuring 4 inches by 4 inches with four repetitions of the design, and an A5-sized sheet (5.8 inches by 8.2 inches) featuring four repetitions along with a few additional designs at the bottom. The cost was $2.40 for the smaller sheet and $4.95 for the larger one, with a flat shipping fee of $3.55. These prices reflect wholesale costs, as Printful does not offer an integrated marketplace or storefront.
Consequently, users must connect Printful to a website builder or create their own storefront to utilize the service. On the upside, this setup grants artists complete control over their pricing and product presentation. Printful charges a fulfillment fee for each item, allowing artists to determine their profits by adjusting the sale price accordingly.
Chapter 5: Conclusion
Operating an independent storefront is no small task; however, considering the limitations of other platforms, it might be worth it for the added control it provides. Competing designs on sites like RedBubble and Society6 often make it challenging to attract an audience. Additionally, the quality of prints and kiss-cuts from alternative services has been inconsistent, whereas Printful has proven to be reliable. I previously ordered a custom-designed mug from Printful as a gift, and the recipient praised its quality, further reinforcing my confidence in their offerings.
This marks the third of four reviews I am conducting. You can read my reviews of RedBubble and Society6 for further insights.
