The Rise and Fall of Apple's Ambitious AirPower Project
Written on
Introduction to AirPower
In August 2017, during Apple's annual event, the company unveiled the iPhone X along with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus—marking their entry into wireless charging capabilities. Alongside these announcements, Apple introduced a visionary concept that would never materialize: AirPower.
Despite being revealed nearly five years ago, AirPower stands out as one of Apple’s rare announcements that failed to reach the market. The project was officially canceled before any units were sold, leaving many disappointed.
The Concept Behind AirPower
AirPower was designed as a versatile charging pad capable of charging up to three devices simultaneously. Users could conveniently power their iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once, eliminating the need for multiple chargers.
At that time, wireless charging was gaining traction, and while various devices existed that could charge two gadgets simultaneously, none had the capability to charge three at once. Apple's goal was to revolutionize the existing technology and deliver an unparalleled user experience.
The unique feature of AirPower was its ability to allow devices to charge from any position on the pad. This required a complex design with numerous charging coils embedded throughout the device.
Challenges Faced by AirPower
However, the ambitious design led to significant technical challenges. Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, Dan Riccio, commented in 2019, "After extensive efforts, we’ve concluded that AirPower will not meet our high standards, and we have decided to cancel the project. We apologize to our customers who were excited for this product."
The issues stemmed from the need to integrate a large number of charging coils to enable the multi-device charging feature. In a leaked prototype, Apple reportedly included 22 coils, but this complexity caused interference and overheating.
Tech reviewer Sonny Dickson noted that the multi-device charging mechanism was proving extremely difficult to refine, citing significant interference issues that affected charging efficiency. Similarly, renowned Apple blogger John Gruber mentioned that the delays were primarily due to the excessive heat generated by the multi-coil design.
Final Thoughts on AirPower
Ultimately, the device was deemed too difficult to manufacture, and no company has successfully created a similar product since. Apple had the option to release a simplified version of AirPower with fewer coils, which would not overheat but would only charge two devices at a time. However, such a product would not meet Apple's stringent quality standards.
As stated previously, Apple prefers to deliver exceptional products rather than settling for anything less than perfect. This commitment to excellence ultimately led to the cancellation of AirPower, as it failed to live up to the company's ideals.
