My laptop, now five years old, has been on my mind for a replacement. While my ideal laptop often changes, it consistently leans towards Apple. Despite the high price, I'm a hidden admirer of Apple products. If fate allows, I’d love to own an Apple MacBook Air with the M1 chip. As a writer working from home, the recent release of the iMac has left me deciding between a MacBook Air, a Mac Mini, or the new iMac 24". However, dreaming about a new device doesn't solve my current dilemma: my sluggish laptop needs to be fixed to maintain my productivity.

Many of us have faced the frustrating reality of a slow Windows laptop. Over time, it naturally becomes less responsive. I must confess, I tend to overload Google Chrome with too many open tabs.

For a writer, my workflow isn't perfect, but it gets the job done. I need to read extensively before forming my thoughts and make sure to cite articles in my writing. Unfortunately, when Google Chrome becomes sluggish, it disrupts my flow, often leading to frustration and halting my progress.

I have a basic understanding of computers and realize that increasing the memory could resolve some of these issues. It’s time to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB of RAM, and I’ve learned that switching from an HDD to an SSD can significantly enhance my computer's speed.

Moreover, I can investigate software issues causing my Windows laptop's slow performance. There are numerous factors to consider, which sometimes results in decision paralysis when contemplating how to speed up my computer.

Section 1.1: Exploring Dual Booting

I have experience with dual booting, which allows two operating systems to coexist on one computer. Frustrated, I previously installed Linux on my laptop. Now that I primarily write on Google Docs and browse multiple tabs, I decided to wipe everything and try a Linux distribution called Linux Mint. However, I advise caution—ensure your files are backed up before attempting such a change.

Linux has its advantages; you can test it out via a live CD without altering your current operating system. Although it has a learning curve, it has become more user-friendly over time. Initially, this setup alleviated my problems, but soon, the Google Chrome issues resurfaced. It’s possible that my Chrome browser is overloaded with extensions or simply consuming too much RAM.

I often find myself contemplating whether to purchase a new laptop as a permanent fix, but there are effective methods to enhance my current setup.

Section 1.2: Upgrading to SSD

My current laptop is an Asus VivoBook Flip TP301UJ from five years ago. While I used to tinker with my devices, I've grown more cautious and often prefer professional help. However, given the difficulty of finding a technician these days, I took the plunge and decided to make the repairs myself. This involved thorough research, as my older laptop might require components that are no longer widely available.

I came across numerous articles highlighting the benefits of swapping an HDD for an SSD, which piqued my interest. Initially, my laptop operated well with an HDD, but I realized it was time to upgrade. After extensive research, I settled on the Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD, despite being unfamiliar with the brand.

As I researched SSDs, I simultaneously looked into upgrading my RAM. If I was opening my laptop, it would be wise to add more memory. I ordered both the Crucial SSD and a Samsung 8GB DDR3 RAM module online.

The first video provides a step-by-step guide on making your PC faster in just 10 minutes, demonstrating effective methods to enhance performance.

Section 1.3: The Installation Process

YouTube, affectionately dubbed "YouTube University" by many, is a treasure trove of how-to videos. I am grateful for tech bloggers who create detailed guides, especially one that precisely matched my laptop model for the HDD to SSD conversion.

When my SSD arrived, I watched a video on how to open my laptop. Given that it had never been opened before, the screws were quite tight.

A key takeaway is to invest in a quality screwdriver set, as it will prove invaluable during the process. As I opened my laptop, I had to muster a lot of faith in my abilities. Unscrewing the screws was the most challenging part, especially those tucked away inside. However, once I removed the old HDD and installed the new SSD, a wave of relief washed over me.

The ultimate test was whether my computer would boot successfully. I opted to install a fresh version of MX Linux. Remember, replacing your HDD with an SSD means your computer will initially lack an operating system. You can find numerous videos on how to perform a fresh installation of your preferred operating system.

I sought my late mother's guidance throughout the process, as she has always been my source of support in decision-making. When I powered on my laptop, the new SSD functioned perfectly, allowing me to install MX Linux.

With the MX Linux live CD, I immediately noticed a significant improvement in boot times and overall speed, especially when using Google Chrome.

However, as time passed, I experienced performance dips, particularly with Chrome. Recognizing that I had too many tabs open, I began to contemplate adding a second monitor to enhance my productivity at home.

The second video offers four simple steps to make your PC run faster, specifically tailored for Windows 10 users.

Chapter 2: RAM Upgrade

I eventually received my 8GB RAM, and with it came a mix of excitement and anxiety. My laptop was functioning better than before, and though Chrome still lagged occasionally, it was manageable. The upgrade had effectively doubled my laptop's speed.

Opening my laptop again was daunting, as it would take time away from writing. However, the arrival of the 8GB RAM left me with little choice but to proceed. Thankfully, I remembered how to navigate the screws from my previous upgrade.

When I reached the RAM compartment, I was shocked to discover that the existing 4GB RAM was soldered onto the motherboard itself. I panicked at first, thinking my upgrade wouldn’t work.

With a prayer for guidance, I searched for videos that detailed RAM upgrades for my specific Asus Vivo model. Fortunately, I discovered that my laptop could accommodate additional memory.

After carefully installing the new RAM, I powered on my laptop, and to my delight, it recognized both the new 8GB RAM and the existing 4GB, totaling 12GB.

The difference in performance was astounding. Boot times were noticeably quicker, and logging into my account felt instantaneous. I could now open multiple tabs in Google Chrome without issue, and my memory test confirmed that the 12GB RAM was functioning perfectly.

I learned that my CPU could theoretically support up to 64GB of RAM, though I questioned whether that would be necessary for my writing tasks. Curiosity about further upgrades lingered, but for now, I was satisfied with my laptop's performance.

In the future, I may consider dual-booting Windows to access specific software that isn’t compatible with Linux. However, for now, my focus remains on writing.

Takeaway

I hope my journey to enhance my laptop's speed offers valuable insights. Upgrading computer hardware isn't always essential, and sometimes financial constraints can limit your options.

It's important to remember that we have the power to fix our devices, much like we can address challenges in other aspects of our lives. My laptop found its hero in me, and I encourage you to discover the hero within yourself as well.
