Chapter 1 Understanding Procrastination
Have you ever wondered why that perfect day to start never seems to arrive?
If you find yourself in a similar situation, you might get bursts of inspiration on an ordinary Friday. The catch? We constantly wait for that ideal Monday that never materializes. In the past, I often formulated grand ideas but left them untouched, naively hoping that future me would take action. My journey to begin writing on Medium was an endless cycle of postponement—I kept deferring it to the next Monday, next month, or even next year. Eventually, I realized that the perfect day I was longing for simply didn’t exist.
To combat this, I devised a new strategy: a bold leap into action, bolstered by some scientific insights. Here are two research-backed reasons explaining why that elusive perfect day remains out of reach.
Our Desire for Instant Gratification
It turns out that our tendency to prioritize instant rewards—like organizing our workspace or taking our dog for a stroll—over starting a significant project is a common issue among procrastinators. We all share this struggle, as we often find more satisfaction in ticking off small tasks rather than facing the uncertainty of larger ones, such as writing.
The Overwhelming Nature of Tasks
It's not that we lack enthusiasm for new interests; rather, the steps required to achieve our goals often seem daunting or tedious. While the thought of engaging with my audience through writing was exciting, the process itself felt insurmountable.
Section 1.1 Strategies to Combat Procrastination
So, how do we tackle these hurdles? As someone who has battled procrastination and is now shifting gears, here are strategies that might help you too:
Conquer the Unknown
Recognizing our preference for immediate rewards allows us to seize the moment. When inspiration strikes for a new hobby, don’t wait for Monday to act. Harness your excitement and create a task checklist immediately, ensuring that many of these tasks offer quick wins.
Craft an Inviting Yet Realistic List
Aim to balance your tasks: they should be engaging but not so overwhelming that you lose motivation. Strive for a mix that keeps you intrigued while remaining attainable.
Just Dive In!
Give yourself permission to start impulsively. If the previous suggestions add to your anxiety, toss them aside. You don’t need to have every detail figured out before you begin; just take the plunge into the task, confront your fears, and adapt as you go. For instance, I began my Medium journey late one Friday night by brainstorming ideas instead of dwelling on "what-ifs."
