Finding Connection Amidst Technology: Lessons from My Phone
Written on
Chapter 1: The Phone Dilemma
Today, my phone encountered a significant malfunction. To clarify, it wasn’t a complete failure, but rather the loss of its essential functions that has left me frustrated. Over recent months, I've struggled with sending group messages, compounded by a faulty charging port and a broken speaker, rendering me unaware of many notifications. While I can tolerate some inconveniences, the inability to communicate effectively with friends and family is a major concern.
Occasionally, my texts go through, but more often than not, they either take an eternity to send or fail entirely. I’ve resorted to a workaround: taking screenshots of messages and sending those as images. Nevertheless, this isn't how technology should facilitate communication. Recently, the situation has worsened, with messages appearing sent on my end but never reaching their intended recipients. It’s a frustrating and awkward experience.
Now, I’m aware there are solutions: purchase a new phone, seek technical assistance, or simply call people directly. However, I’m resistant to spending money on a new device unless it’s utterly unusable. My past experiences with tech support have been disappointing, and as a millennial, I prefer text over calls.
I even attempted a factory reset today, hoping it would resolve my issues. Unfortunately, it only added to the frustration of re-entering passwords for every app I use. The next step involves resetting my SIM card information—technical jargon that feels tedious. What’s the point of all this complaining about my phone problems?
Section 1.1: The Deeper Issue
This situation highlights a deeper concern: the sense of isolation I feel when my phone fails to function properly. Even though I still have access to everything else, the lack of complete functionality makes me feel disconnected from my friends, family, and the world at large.
Why does my phone evoke such feelings of anxiety and discontent? As someone who has experienced a relationship with God, I wonder why I don’t feel the same urgency to connect with Him when I’m not actively seeking His presence. Should I feel guilty for my lack of emotional response towards my spiritual life compared to my phone? I believe this presents an opportunity for growth and a chance to reassess what truly matters to me.
God is not like technology—He doesn’t send notifications or demand our attention. Instead, He desires a relationship that requires our initiative. Much like my relationship with my four-year-old son, who often has different interests than mine, God waits patiently for us to engage with Him.

Section 1.2: The Importance of Connection
God yearns for intimacy with us, just as He respects our free will. He is always present, waiting for us to acknowledge Him in our daily lives. We often overlook those moments, choosing distractions instead. This negligence can lead to a stagnation in our spiritual growth and an inability to hear His voice.
How can I nurture my relationship with God in the same way I worry about my malfunctioning phone? How can I learn from the lessons that technology teaches me about communication and connection?
Chapter 2: Remembering the Good Times
My initial thought is to recall the positive experiences I’ve had in my conversations with God, much like how I remember when my phone worked seamlessly. A recurring theme in the book of Genesis is forgetfulness—especially concerning God’s faithfulness.
For instance, after the flood, Noah sought comfort in wine, possibly to escape the trauma of his experiences. This avoidance highlights the importance of maintaining a relationship with God, who has always been there for us. In moments of darkness, we must remember that hope will rise again, and staying connected to God provides the light we need.

Don’t Forget to Back Up Your Heart
My second thought is recognizing the signs when I neglect my relationship with God. Life becomes challenging when I choose my own path over divine guidance. Much like a phone needing an update, I need a reset when I stray from what truly matters.
I have my own “pillars of faith”—reminders of God’s faithfulness that help me reset and restore my relationship with Him. These reminders allow me to return to a state of spiritual well-being without the bugs of disconnection.
Who Am I Loyal To?
My third thought centers on how I should respond to God more faithfully than I do to my phone. People eagerly await the latest tech updates, yet do we approach our spiritual growth with the same enthusiasm? Shouldn’t I desire to become the best version of myself, just as I seek the latest technology?
We must be cautious not to create our own flawed versions of ourselves. There is a trustworthy Creator who offers true upgrades if we are willing to seek them.
We Can’t Remain on 1% Forever
Lastly, just as our phones require charging to function, we too must find ways to recharge spiritually. This isn’t about physical needs but about nurturing our spiritual battery through time spent with God.
When I intentionally engage with God, my life improves significantly. He is an infinite source of energy, waiting for us to connect. Spending time in His word, in conversation, and in following His ways fills us with love and truth.
Goodbye.
