# What I Learned from 6 Years of ASMR Listening: A Personal Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: The Transformation Through ASMR
Since I stumbled upon ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) in 2017, my life has taken a positive turn. This unique tool has provided me with a means to unwind, find rest, and connect with others—all at no cost!
Initially emerging on YouTube as the ‘whisper community,’ ASMR has now gained significant traction, featuring prominently in films, ads, and our daily lives. It's fascinating to consider where it might lead us in a decade. Personally, I know I'll still be tuning in.
Over these six years, I've gleaned numerous insights about ASMR and its effective use. Here are five key takeaways from my long-term engagement with ASMR.
(P.S. If you're unfamiliar with ASMR, start by checking out this explanation.)
Section 1.1: Alleviating Anxiety and Stress
One glance at the comments on any ASMR video reveals countless individuals sharing how it has alleviated their anxiety and stress. This is one of the core functions of ASMR: to foster relaxation and comfort.
Listening to soft whispers or gentle voices instantly calms my heart rate and breathing. In moments of heightened anxiety or sensory overload, ASMR can bring my panic down to nearly nothing.
This soothing effect stems from the tranquil and tender nature of ASMR. Depending on the video, you might hear sounds like rain falling, whispered affirmations, or fabric being smoothed out. These are known as ‘triggers.’
Unlike the typical connotation of being ‘triggered,’ these sounds are designed to calm rather than aggravate. ASMRtists incorporate various sound categories in their videos, including tapping, hair brushing, writing, and makeup application.
The ability to access these triggers in diverse combinations is both enjoyable and relaxing. You can discover your favorites and return to them whenever anxiety strikes. Before ASMR, I struggled with breathing exercises that never seemed effective. Now, ASMR stands as my primary defense against the chaotic, fast-paced world around me, providing unparalleled stress relief.
Section 1.2: The Power of Organic Lo-Fi Sounds
Five years back, ASMR was a hidden gem on the internet. Now, YouTube is flooded with creators producing ASMR content, with new genres and triggers emerging thanks to a more diverse group of voices.
Among these creators, I find the organic, lo-fi content the most appealing. You might wonder what I mean by that.
Much of ASMR content typically boasts high-quality audio and visuals, with soft LED lighting and distinct sound triggers crafted by the creator. The aim is to produce the clearest, most refined ASMR sounds.
Check out this example from ASMRSurge:
On the other hand, lo-fi ASMR, which refers to low fidelity, tends to be more budget-friendly, often filmed with an old phone camera and a basic microphone. The quality is fuzzy, and the sounds are less distinct.
See this example from Southern Sounds ASMR:
In my view, lo-fi ASMR is the best kind. It feels more genuine and less sanitized. While crisp sounds can make me feel alert, lo-fi sounds help me drift off to sleep. Of course, this is all a matter of personal preference!
Chapter 2: The Versatility of ASMR
Section 2.1: ASMR in Every Genre
Transitioning from the serene world of ASMR back to reality can be jarring. You’re met with car horns, washing machines, and neighbors shouting.
Even regular YouTube content can be overwhelming. However, there’s a trick to ease this transition: ASMR everything. This term describes the fusion of ASMR with various video genres.
Documentaries, vlogs, gaming, makeup tutorials, antique restoration, cooking, and even audiobooks are now being produced in ASMR format.
Take this video by Library of Whispers ASMR:
This creator has crafted a series of audiobooks, all delivered in an ASMR style. You can listen to her whispering J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories just like a regular audiobook. By adding ‘ASMR’ to your YouTube search, you’ll uncover a treasure trove of content you may not have come across otherwise—whispered audiobooks are just the tip of the iceberg!
Section 2.2: More Than Just Sleep Aid
Last year, I found myself in an emergency room for a painful infection. Cramped in a corner chair in the bustling waiting area, I felt overwhelmed by noise and a strong bleach odor, causing my heart rate to spike. Desperate for relief, I decided to listen to ASMR with my headphones in public for the first time.
The calming effect was immediate. While I don't believe in miracles, ASMR helped me find a sense of tranquility in a situation that was otherwise distressing. Not only did it ease my anxiety, but it also made the waiting time feel more bearable.
The point I'm trying to make is that ASMR is not solely for inducing sleep. From an outside perspective, it might seem like that’s its only purpose. However, ASMR serves multiple functions: it can calm you during stressful moments, help pass the time, entertain you, alleviate loneliness, and even facilitate learning.
Section 2.3: Accepting Different Perspectives
Here’s my most controversial point: I'm perfectly fine if you don't like ASMR. I understand. There are aspects that don't resonate with me either, and I often wonder why some people enjoy it.
In fact, within the ASMR community, differing opinions on voices, triggers, and styles are often embraced. For example, check out this video from FemaleASMR, which humorously critiques ASMR styles she finds unappealing:
Listening to whispers or soft voices isn't universally enjoyable. For some, ASMR may provoke irritation or anxiety, especially if one has misophonia—an aversion to certain sounds.
There are numerous reasons why someone might not enjoy ASMR, and that's completely valid.
Final Thoughts
Whether you love it or can't stand it, ASMR continues to grow in popularity. Throughout this piece, I've linked to several remarkable ASMRtists, many of whom are personal favorites of mine.
If you're intrigued by ASMR, check out those videos for a taste of the experience. Conversely, if you're even more averse to ASMR now, that's a legitimate reaction too!
