Chapter 1: Reflecting on Time

Imagine the emotions your parents experienced when they first held you, along with the dreams and aspirations they envisioned for your future.

As a young entrepreneur, I found myself at the forefront of a unique product distribution that was unavailable in my country at the time. Today, that very product has become ubiquitous in both commercial and residential spaces.

Before my arrival, innovations like electric lighting, telephones, and even cellophane tape had already transformed the world. By the time I completed high school in 1964, we saw the dawn of personal computers, mobile phones, sticky notes, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), and thumb drives capable of storing vast amounts of information. The emergence of the Internet and touch screen technology has been pivotal as well. Many esteemed colleagues I worked alongside have contributed significantly to the technologies we now take for granted.

In hindsight, I recall making a rather dismissive comment similar to Bill Gates’ assertion in The Road Ahead, claiming that “the Internet was just a passing trend.” In my late twenties, I believed that all the groundbreaking inventions had already been created.

During my early experiences with the IBM 360, a classmate once asked, “Are there any practical applications we can develop using this technology?” This exchange took place back in 1965.

If we consider the technological advancements of the last decade and a half, it’s evident that we have progressed more than in the entirety of the 1900s. This is why I firmly believe that we are living in the best of times. Each new concept, innovation, or development can invigorate and uplift our spirits.
