Will Language Learning Become a Thing of the Past?

Written on

The Importance of Language Learning

Languages can be quite challenging to master. While many individuals globally attempt to communicate in a shared language (often English), native languages remain widespread. With over 7,000 languages in existence, only a handful dominate the linguistic landscape. According to Statista, here is a graph illustrating the number of speakers for the most widely spoken languages.

Why Learn Different Languages?

There are various motivations for learning additional languages:

  • Global Employment: Engaging with clients across different countries or traveling for work.
  • Translation Careers: Pursuing a profession in translation.
  • Travel: Enhancing your travel experiences.
  • Personal Growth: For the pure enjoyment of learning.

When visiting a region where the local language is predominantly spoken, one must either attempt to acquire that language or rely on translation apps.

The Challenge of Language Acquisition

Mastering a new language is no small feat, especially given the variations in language origins, phonetics, grammar, and speaking styles. Adults often find this particularly arduous. Although translation apps can be helpful, they typically necessitate the use of handheld devices, which can slow down communication.

Innovations in AI and Language Models

As AI technology and language models advance, the potential for real-time translation becomes more promising. If we could miniaturize these models into compact earpieces, it would revolutionize communication. Picture this: as an English speaker visiting a remote area in India where English is rarely spoken, having an earpiece that translates the native language into English would alleviate the need to learn a new language. However, this would only facilitate one-way communication; both parties would need similar devices to converse effectively.

Recently, I shared a tweet regarding AirChat, inquiring about its capabilities for live translation, which led me to discover Google Earbuds and Timekettle. Google Earbuds do not offer live translation; instead, users must activate the translate app on their phone, speak into the mic, and display the translation to others. This method involves multiple steps and reliance on a handheld device, which can be cumbersome.

Conversely, Timekettle presents an intriguing solution with its live translation feature. It allows two individuals to share a single earpiece, enabling seamless communication in different languages while translating the conversation in real-time.

Innovations in India

Recently, Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella highlighted an app called Jugalbandi, developed for language translation in India. Given the country’s linguistic diversity, disseminating information in every language can be challenging. The demonstration video illustrated how farmers could communicate in their native tongue and receive responses in the same language, thus eliminating the need for them to learn a new language for their work.

Although live translation technology like Timekettle remains expensive, applications like Jugalbandi have the potential to be transformative. I am optimistic that hardware costs will decrease over time, ultimately allowing for live translation without needing external devices.

Envisioning the Future

Looking ahead 10 to 20 years, I can foresee a company like Neuralink developing a chip implant that includes a language translation module, eliminating the need for any external device.

This raises an intriguing question: will people stop learning new languages altogether? Could it become an outdated skill? What will happen to companies like Duolingo? Only time will reveal the answers, but I suspect we are moving toward a future where the thrill of learning different languages may diminish.
