Chapter 1: The Unexpected Benefits of Studying Philosophy
When I first delved into philosophy, I presumed it was solely about pondering abstract concepts. However, I soon realized that the true value of studying philosophy lies in its ability to improve one’s life.

Throughout my teenage years, I developed a keen interest in philosophy. My father, who claims to have studied it at university, often engaged in discussions with his friends that captivated my attention. They explored topics like religion, the human mind, and societal dynamics. Their debates on morality and truth sparked my critical thinking, even though I merely listened and reflected.
These conversations were both enjoyable and enlightening. Thus, when I enrolled in university, I felt compelled to take several philosophy courses. While I found them intriguing and educational, I struggled to understand their practical applications in my life or future career. Uncertain of their relevance, I decided to stop pursuing philosophy classes.
Nonetheless, I occasionally read articles and books on the subject during my free time, treating them as leisurely distractions rather than serious studies.
My Introduction to Stoicism
One day, I stumbled upon a blog post (or perhaps it was a YouTube video?) by Tim Ferriss discussing Stoicism. He shared how this philosophy had significantly improved his life. Intrigued, I engaged with the content, which provided practical advice I could implement. Initially, I perceived Stoicism as akin to Buddhism and similar to self-help literature, which I found easier to digest.
Consequently, I didn’t give Stoicism much thought until the pandemic of 2020, when I discovered Ryan Holiday’s "Stillness is the Key" on sale for just a dollar on Kindle. The description piqued my interest, so I purchased it (you can read my review here).
As I read, I recognized that while some concepts echoed those in Buddhism, many were unique and offered valuable insights. The book was also straightforward and accessible, prompting me to explore more of Holiday's work, including his YouTube videos and daily newsletter. Eventually, I acquired additional books by him.
Through this journey, I learned essential lessons about living well and maintaining composure in challenging situations. Ultimately, this encapsulates the essence of studying philosophy: it aims to teach you how to lead a fulfilling life and be a good person—rather than merely engaging in theoretical debates about free will or argumentation, which, while entertaining, are secondary.
As Seneca articulates in his "Moral Letters": “Philosophy isn’t a parlor trick or made for show. It’s not concerned with words, but with facts. It’s not employed for some pleasure before the day is spent, or to relieve the uneasiness of our leisure. It shapes and builds up the soul, it gives order to life, guides action, shows what should and shouldn’t be done — it sits at the rudder steering our course as we vacillate in uncertainties. Without it, no one can live without fear or free from care. Countless things happen every hour that require advice, and such advice is to be sought out in philosophy.” — Seneca, Moral Letters, 16.3
For those unfamiliar, Seneca is a renowned Stoic philosopher with an intriguing narrative.
Chapter 2: Embracing Philosophy for Personal Growth
The first video titled "Meet Sophie: Top 5 Reasons to Study Philosophy" explores the significant impact philosophy can have on personal development and life choices. It highlights the reasons to incorporate philosophical thinking into everyday life.
The second video, "All Students Need to Study Philosophy," emphasizes the essential role philosophy plays in fostering critical thinking and enhancing one’s understanding of the world.
Final Reflections
Philosophy can indeed be entertaining and enjoyable. However, it’s crucial to focus on how it can help you become a better and more content individual. If you're eager to improve your life, I encourage you to study philosophy and integrate its teachings into your daily experiences.
