Unlocking Medium: 8 Essential Insights for New Writers
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Medium
We all aspire to become paid writers, enabling us to leave behind our traditional jobs or supplement our income through platforms like Medium. When I first started, I had no prior writing experience and was unaware of Medium's existence until 2022. Once I discovered it, I committed to leveraging this platform as a potential source of income and a way to meet others with similar interests.
Fast forward a year, and I am now earning hundreds of dollars monthly, with a follower count nearing 3,000, and contributing as a writer and editor for various publications. Throughout this journey, I have learned valuable lessons that I wish someone had shared with me at the start. Here are eight pivotal insights:

Section 1.1: The Importance of Your Title
Your title is critical to your article's success.
The title, subtitle, and first image are your first chance to capture a reader's interest. In a sea of thousands of articles on Medium, it’s essential to create a title that compels readers to click. It doesn’t have to resort to clickbait; instead, it should indicate the value readers will gain. For instance, using a list format in your title, like "5 Hidden Secrets of Medium," immediately signals to readers that they will learn something valuable and not easily found elsewhere.
Section 1.2: Enhance Visibility with Tools
Utilize a headline analyzer tool.
Employing a headline analyzer can significantly boost your article's visibility and improve its search engine optimization. This tool provides a percentage rating of how likely your article is to be seen and offers suggestions for power, emotional, and unique words to enhance visibility. Since integrating this into my title creation, I have achieved the status of Top Writer across ten categories.

Section 1.3: Engage with the Community
Engagement is rewarded by the algorithm.
Being active on Medium, even outside of writing, is crucial. The algorithm favors those who engage with others by reading, clapping, and commenting. Since I began doing this, my follower count has surged, and my articles have experienced increased views and read times. Commenting on others’ posts increases your profile's visibility, encouraging readers to check out your work. It's also vital to respond to comments on your articles, as this enhances your visibility on the platform.
Section 1.4: Understanding the Platform
Take time to familiarize yourself with Medium.
You wouldn’t expect to pass a driving test without practice; the same goes for Medium. Understanding how the platform operates, what it values, and how it rewards engagement is essential. I dedicated time to read countless articles relevant to my niche, analyzing successful strategies, trends, and popular topics.

Section 1.5: Choosing the Right Publications and Topics
Select your publications and topics wisely.
I recommend applying to as many publications as possible that will accept your work. This approach can enhance your visibility and help you gain more followers. The more eyes on your content, the more views and read time you accumulate, which in turn increases your earnings. Don’t underestimate the importance of topics; they help readers discover your articles under relevant categories. For instance, if your focus is productivity, categorizing your work under 'self-improvement,' 'advice,' and 'life lessons' can attract the right audience.
Section 1.6: Write with Purpose
Aim to inform, guide, or solve problems for your readers.
Always have a clear purpose when you write. Successful writers on Medium are those who provide solutions, guidance, or education to their audience. When you establish yourself as a knowledgeable source on a particular topic, readers are likely to return. For example, my niche is neurodiversity, while others might focus on writing or politics. Starting with a clear intention will help you identify your niche sooner.
Section 1.7: The Value of Planning
Planning is crucial.
Regularly brainstorming article titles and topics is a skill worth developing. I suggest dedicating around 30 minutes each week to generate as many ideas as you can. This preparation makes it easier to write consistently and reduces the anxiety of starting from scratch each time.
Section 1.8: Invest in Your Craft
Use grammar-checking tools.
Invest in tools like Grammarly to ensure your writing is polished and free of errors. This investment enhances your professionalism and improves the overall quality of your work.
