# Reflections on My First Year as a Solopreneur: Lessons Learned
Written on
Chapter 1: A New Beginning
It's been a year since I left my full-time position to carve out a life on my own terms. Having spent considerable time in the corporate sector, I gradually became aware of my growing discontent with the traditional 9-to-5 routine. One day, it struck me that being confined to an office for eight hours was no longer acceptable, especially when I could complete my work more efficiently. I was tired of expending energy on projects that brought me no joy and solely relying on a paycheck.
My happiness hinged on simple pleasures: morning strolls, reading daily, preparing healthy meals, and soaking in a sunset view. I yearned for these moments, which felt like they were slipping away. That realization compelled me to resign and embark on a new journey as a solopreneur.
Now, as I reflect on the past year, I evaluate my emotional highs and lows and question whether this decision was indeed the right one.
1. Self-Discipline is Key
One of the most vital skills for any solopreneur is self-discipline. The ability to structure your work, plan for the future, and remain committed to your objectives will ultimately determine your success. In this journey, it’s just you and your aspirations—no one else will hold you accountable.
Managing my time effectively while resisting procrastination has proven to be my greatest challenge. Here’s a glimpse of my typical week:
- Communicating with clients
- Writing content for my website
- Crafting blog posts for Medium
- Drafting newsletters
- Troubleshooting website issues
- Studying technical SEO
- Analyzing the crypto market to adapt my strategies
It’s quite a workload! Often, I feel drained and guilty for not completing everything on my to-do list. But, such is life—it will never be flawless. If you choose the solopreneur path, prepare for a full plate. Success is achievable for those who are disciplined and focused, but it certainly won’t come easily.
2. Embrace Uncertainty
While you can set goals and work tirelessly towards them, the journey of a solopreneur is inherently unpredictable. You never truly know which projects will flourish or what unexpected opportunities might arrive.
For instance, last August, I received an enticing offer and ended up collaborating with an SEO client for nearly a year. I never anticipated that my Medium blog would generate four-figure earnings and attract potential clients. My stories on Medium currently net me between $900 and $1,000+ monthly from just 5-6 posts.
Conversely, I had high expectations for my website. Despite its capability to generate substantial income, I had envisioned it bringing in even more through affiliate partnerships, which hasn’t materialized yet.
3. Growth Brings New Challenges
Receiving 2-3 client inquiries each month reassures me that my modest SEO venture is expanding. However, I’ve come to understand that short-term projects demand more energy and time while yielding lesser results than long-term commitments. The latter provides stability—securing long-term deals means you won’t constantly worry about finding new clients.
Nonetheless, growth introduces its own set of challenges. Although I’ve engaged some contractors for my website, I’ve yet to hire anyone for client-related tasks. I sense it’s time to confront these challenges head-on and devise a solution.
Growth requires you to:
- Identify reliable experts.
- Ensure those you hire meet client expectations.
- Develop efficient workflows.
- Accept increased responsibilities.
Taking on more responsibilities inevitably leads to added stress, which is something I’m grappling with. I realize this is part of the growth process and essential for providing greater value to others. I’m preparing myself to manage more stress and responsibility.
Have you faced similar challenges? How did you navigate them?
4. The Quest for Semi-Passive Income
Energy is a finite resource. I recall my days working late nights as a client manager for US clients while attending university during the day in my twenties. Now, ten years later, I struggle to muster the energy for evening activities. I often wonder how others manage to socialize late at night!
My journey as a solopreneur has been arduous, leading me to understand that every task involves a trade-off between professional and personal commitments. Each new gig or side project often means sacrificing time with friends, family, or even with my children. While it might be tolerable in the short run, this mindset rarely resolves quickly. Ambition tends to breed a desire for more from your business.
Work has consumed my focus for a long time. However, I’ve realized that I can no longer single-handedly drive all my projects. Consequently, I’m exploring strategies for generating semi-passive income. Some avenues I've already established include:
- Sales from my SEO writing ebook, totaling over $5,900
- Affiliate partnerships through my website
- Paid mentions and link-building services from my site
- Monetization of my newsletter via SparkLoop
I’m gradually shifting toward a lifestyle that offers me more freedom and control.
What about your experiences?
In Conclusion
Despite the hurdles, I find joy in the life I’m crafting. The happiness I feel while enjoying a quiet moment on my balcony, sipping tea and watching the world rush by, is indescribable. Solopreneurship empowers you to design the life you desire and grants you freedom.
This past year has been challenging but filled with small, joyful moments that make it all worthwhile.
