The primary issue I've encountered with the Pomodoro Technique is that many of my tasks often require more than the allotted 25 minutes. For example, when I’m creating a script for YouTube, I usually enter a productive state of flow after just a few minutes. Unfortunately, the Pomodoro Technique interrupts this focus, forcing me to shift gears just when I’m getting into a rhythm.

When the timer goes off, I find myself having to pause my thoughts and refocus after the break, which can disrupt my productivity significantly.

A More Effective Approach

After experimenting, I discovered a more efficient method that allows me to maintain my workflow without significant drawbacks. About a year ago, I began planning my week during weekends, allocating 1.5-hour blocks for focused work in the mornings. This practice, rooted in the deep work principle, involves working with complete concentration on a task without distractions.

Instead of sticking to rigid 25-minute sessions, I recommend scheduling your work in 1.5-hour deep work intervals. If you’re still in the zone after this time, continue working until your focus wanes. Conversely, if you find yourself losing concentration, shift to the next task in your schedule.

For breaks, I used to implement a 30-minute pause after every two 1.5-hour sessions. Now, I opt for lighter, less demanding tasks instead of unproductive breaks. For instance, after completing two deep work intervals, I might read a few pages of a book or tackle smaller routine tasks.

To enhance your productivity, try incorporating 1.5-hour deep work blocks into your routine starting tomorrow. Allow yourself to extend these blocks if you’re still engaged in your work.

Once you've adopted this alternative to the Pomodoro Technique, you'll likely find yourself becoming more productive and managing your time more effectively.
