Exploring the Myth and Evidence of Giants in History

Chapter 1: The Myth of Giants
Do you ever ponder the existence of giants? When asked this question, the immediate reaction of many is a firm denial. They dismiss giants as mere fabrications, products of folklore and fantasy. However, could there be more truth to these legends than we realize?
What’s fascinating is the considerable evidence suggesting that giants might have roamed the Earth at some point. Giants are a common theme across various cultures, often accompanied by archaeological findings that seem to support their existence. If giants were real, they likely thrived during the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, possibly going extinct similar to Neandertals. Yet, the topic of giants is rarely broached, leaving one to wonder why.
This is a captivating question with no straightforward answer. While giants are often associated with mythology, not every tale steeped in legend is entirely false. Surprisingly, there seems to be more evidence supporting the existence of giants than one might expect, raising eyebrows as to why there aren’t more enthusiasts akin to those who believe in Bigfoot or extraterrestrial beings.
Section 1.1: Cultural Narratives of Giants
Virtually every civilization has narratives featuring giants. These beings are typically characterized as enormous humans. In some cultures, they are depicted as brutish and aggressive, whereas in others, they are simply seen as oversized individuals. The Bible contains notable references to giants, with Goliath being a prime example, famously described as towering over nine feet.
The Greeks also recounted tales of giants, who supposedly clashed with the gods. Numerous legends are backed by reports of giant bones being discovered, with some temples showcasing these relics for public viewing.
During Roman times, the city of Tingis in North Africa claimed that a giant founded the settlement. The Romans, intrigued by this claim, excavated the founder's grave, only to uncover the largest bones they had ever seen. They subsequently reburied the remains with great reverence. Skeptics often attribute these bones to giant elephants found in the region, but that doesn’t necessarily invalidate the claims regarding the giant's existence. Such rationalizations are common when confronting the evidence of giants.
Historical texts often recount these accounts not as myths, but as historical realities.
Section 1.2: The Archaeological Record
Some archaeological discoveries lend credence to the notion of giants. However, many dismiss these findings due to a prevalent bias against the idea of giants.
In 1890, archaeologists in France unearthed bones that dated back to the Neolithic era, coinciding with the period giants are said to have existed in various cultures. These remains suggested a height of nearly twelve feet. The discovery was reported in La Nature, referring to this individual as the Giant of Castelnau.
Additional giant bones were found in the same decade and region, including skulls with diameters of nearly three feet, stirring local gossip about an ancient race of humans standing between ten and fifteen feet tall.
In 1912, miners in Nevada stumbled upon giant skeletons in Lovelock Cave, a finding that was notably covered by the New York Times on several occasions. The paper also reported the discovery of a forearm measuring four feet long in 1902, alongside reports of giant bones recovered from a large burial mound in 1882.
Despite the substantial archaeological evidence pointing to the existence of giants, a staggering 65% of Americans profess to believe in aliens—a curious juxtaposition.
Chapter 2: Perceptions of Giants versus Dinosaurs and Aliens
The widespread skepticism surrounding giants is particularly intriguing when contrasted with the acceptance of dinosaurs and aliens. Dinosaurs are universally acknowledged as real, despite no living human having encountered one. Their existence is solely supported by geological evidence and theories encompassing deep time. Yet, the amalgamation of archaeological, cultural, and historical evidence for giants fails to elicit the same acceptance; while dinosaurs are embraced, giants are dismissed.
Similarly, many people readily entertain the idea of aliens, often extrapolating from natural phenomena to support their beliefs, despite a lack of substantial evidence. Conversely, the narrative around giants tends to be countered with explanations that lean towards rejection rather than curiosity.
This dichotomy presents a fascinating case of cognitive dissonance.

Section 2.1: Giants in the Context of Reality
Two key factors may help elucidate why ancient societies believed in giants. Aside from biblical and Greek mythological accounts, most stories are not contemporaneous. Similar to dinosaurs, giants are often portrayed as beings from a past era, preceding documented history. Ancient people might have unearthed dinosaur or mammoth bones, mistakenly identifying them as remains of gigantic humans. Without complete skeletal knowledge, it’s plausible that large femurs could be misinterpreted as belonging to enormous individuals rather than colossal reptiles.
Another aspect to consider is gigantism—a rare condition leading to extraordinary heights. The tallest verified individual in history reached 8' 11", while the tallest living person today is 8' 3". Both would certainly qualify as giants in any period, especially if found clad in armor. If their graves were discovered without prior knowledge, they would be classified as giant remains.
Conclusion: Reflecting on Giant Existence
So, did giants truly exist? I tend to lean towards the affirmative, given the substantial evidence suggesting that some form of giants existed prior to recorded human history. They might have been linked to ancient species like Neandertals, although the specifics remain uncertain. Alternatively, it’s conceivable that ancient peoples unearthed mammoth or dinosaur bones, attributing them to human origins.
While the existence of giants isn’t a hill I’m prepared to die on, it’s certainly an avenue worth exploring. The evidence for giants parallels that of dinosaurs, mammoths, and aliens, yet society appears much more inclined to accept the latter. This discrepancy has always piqued my interest and continues to engage my thoughts.
So, what are your thoughts? Did giants exist? If so, in what capacity? Do you find the scattered evidence of giants in mythology and archaeology compelling, or do you perceive it as an elaborate hoax? I'd love to hear your perspective.
