Essential Reads for EMDR Therapy: Navigating Isolation and Trauma
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding EMDR Therapy
The contemporary landscape of enforced isolation presents significant challenges for both practitioners and their clients.
Fortunately, remote EMDR therapy has proven to be as effective as face-to-face sessions, provided there is a solid foundation of trust between the client and the therapist, along with adequate qualifications on the therapist's part. It is crucial for all professionals practicing EMDR to receive training from accredited trainers recognized by European or American associations, even if they have previously learned the method from non-accredited instructors. It's important to note that, currently, there are no accredited trainers available in Russia. Additionally, to effectively conduct online sessions, familiarity with group protocols has become essential.
Section 1.1: Recommended Literature for EMDR Practitioners
What literature should one explore beyond Francine Shapiro's seminal work, Eye Movement Therapy for Emotional Trauma? In recent years, there has been a proliferation of books available in Russian on EMDR, catering to both practitioners and clients.
For both clients and professionals, I highly recommend Francine Shapiro's Overcoming the Past, which offers straightforward language and valuable self-help strategies. Another noteworthy title is The Body Remembers Everything by Bessel van der Kolk. While this book isn't solely focused on EMDR, it does reference the method, and the author has recognized EMDR as a crucial tool in trauma work during a recent conference. This book provides a profound exploration of PTSD's history, along with insights from the latest research on trauma of various kinds. It's particularly beneficial for specialists working with individuals dealing with PTSD or complex PTSD (cPTSD), as it features numerous client case studies that can help reduce feelings of shame and isolation stemming from difficult experiences.
Subsection 1.1.1: Comprehensive Guides and Techniques
EMDR: The Complete Guide. Theory and Treatment of Complex PTSD and Dissociation by Jim Knipe is highly recommended for specialists who deal with cPTSD. A prior familiarity with the EMDR 2.0 protocol by Ade de Jong and an understanding of The Body Remembers Everything will enhance your comprehension of this book. Similar to van der Kolk's work, Knipe's book discusses challenging client cases, so be prepared for that.
Another essential read is Through the Eyes of Trauma and Dissociation by Sandra Paulsen. While the author suggests it for both specialists and clients, I believe it is more suited for professionals. Before diving into this book, I recommend familiarizing yourself with theories regarding ego states and the multiple organization of personality; Richard Schwartz's works will be particularly beneficial. This book is a goldmine of techniques that can aid specialists across various therapeutic modalities.
Ana Gomez's EMDR Therapy and Auxiliary Approaches in the Treatment of Children: Complex Trauma, Attachment Trauma, and Dissociative Disorders is an excellent resource for therapists working with children and adults alike. It enhances understanding of cause-and-effect relationships, aiding in target identification and the theory of adaptive information processing.
While I may have overlooked some titles, the recommended literature forms a foundational toolkit for any EMDR specialist engaged in trauma work. Moreover, even those outside of EMDR practice will find these books valuable, as they compile extensive research findings, numerous stabilization techniques, and reflect contemporary perspectives in psychotherapy.
