Developing a Reading Habit in Just 20 Minutes: A Personal Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: My Early Reading Experiences
Reflecting on my childhood, I recall a time when my father was determined to instill good reading habits in my brothers and me. He would arrange for each of us to sit in our own chair, ensuring enough distance to avoid distractions.
“Alright kids, find your seats,” he would say. “You’ll read to me for twenty minutes—pick any book you like.” At least we had that freedom.
“You need to read aloud so I can hear you,” echoed in the room. While it felt a bit like a chore at the time—especially after finishing our homework when all I wanted was to join my friends outside—the afternoons spent reading became memorable.
Initially, I must admit, I wasn’t very enthusiastic about those 20 minutes. However, as the weeks went by, I found myself engrossed in the stories. Before long, I no longer needed my father’s reminders to read. Those moments of reading transformed into a daily ritual that flew by, often extending beyond the initial twenty minutes, especially when my friends were busy forming teams outside.
Why You Should Read More
Engaging with books can greatly expand your knowledge. Reading immerses you in different narratives, allowing you to visualize and embody various characters, fostering critical thinking and enhancing concentration. It also has additional advantages: it sharpens decision-making skills, broadens vocabulary, and serves as a guide in your actions. For many, it improves social interactions—who doesn't enjoy conversing with someone who can share diverse insights?
Chapter 2: The Impact of a Memorable Video
Recently, I stumbled upon a short video that brought back fond memories of my father’s influence on my reading journey. It reminded me of the valuable legacy he left us: the love for books. The nostalgia hit hard, recalling moments when my siblings and I would attempt to sneak past our father, hoping he wouldn’t notice us trying to avoid our reading time—it worked occasionally, but not always.
The video, while brief, discusses the significance of reading and reflects on the educational practices that persist today. It also features insights from a prominent figure in the tech industry about his reading experiences throughout different life stages.
