# Embracing Growth: Life Lessons from My Father's Tough Love

Written on

Chapter 1: The Impact of Tough Love

There’s a saying that resonates with me deeply, not just because it rings true but due to my own experiences throughout various stages of my life.

"Average fathers have patience. Good fathers have more patience. Great fathers have an ocean of patience."

My father, a disciplined military veteran, embodies this wisdom. His life revolves around principles of discipline, integrity, and ethics. With an unwavering commitment to our family, he pushed me to undertake challenges that most parents would find hard to endorse. While these moments felt like hardships back then, they've ultimately shaped who I am today.

Section 1.1: Facing Discomfort

At the age of 12, my father instructed me to visit a bank alone to set up a savings account, fully aware that minors typically require adult supervision. The bustling environment was intimidating, filled with anxious customers and hushed conversations.

As I stepped inside, overwhelmed by the crowd and unsure of my next move, I approached the nearest counter. To my surprise, it turned out to be the bank manager's office, who was both amused and taken aback by my boldness. That day, I made choices independently—asking for help, sharing information, and taking notes to relay back to my dad.

Each decision I made boosted my self-confidence and honed my ability to make quick decisions. Throughout the years, my dad consistently nudged me out of my comfort zone, which allowed me to unearth strengths I never realized I had. What initially seemed punitive transformed into a foundation for unshakeable confidence and self-assurance.

Section 1.2: Choosing the Hard Path

As a child, I often overlooked my test schedules. Whenever I sought advice from my dad, he had a consistent response: "When in doubt, choose the difficult option."

I remember when I cheated on an assignment and was caught. My dad made it clear that I needed to own my mistake. With tears in my eyes, I approached my teacher to apologize, vowing never to repeat that error.

This principle became a guiding mantra for the challenges I faced, even as an adult. We encounter countless decisions every day, such as whether to exercise, indulge in a binge-watching session, or try a new hobby.

The simple equation is this:

  • Hard Decisions = Easy Life
  • Easy Decisions = Hard Life

Unbeknownst to me, my father was teaching me how to make decisions and confront challenges head-on.

Section 1.3: A Lesson in Finance

In seventh grade, my father surprised me with a trip to a stockbroker’s office. I remember the sweltering heat and my initial reluctance. Upon entering, I was captivated by the old computers and the constant stream of stock prices flashing across the screens.

That day marked my first foray into the financial world, culminating in my first stock purchase—Larsen & Toubro. From then on, all my birthday and holiday money went into the stock market. This experience instilled in me the value of delayed gratification and opened my eyes to the power of early financial education.

Section 1.4: Problem-Solving Skills

In eighth grade, I tried out for the school badminton team but was dismissed without a chance. Disheartened, I turned to my dad for sympathy. However, his response was unexpected: "You don’t need anyone’s permission to showcase your talents. Find a way."

Instead of relying on the coach, we created our own badminton courts in the school auditorium and practiced daily. Eventually, we organized trials for the team, impressing the coach with our dedication and skill. This experience taught me invaluable lessons about leadership, resilience, and the importance of taking initiative.

Section 1.5: The Morning Routine

During my teenage years, sleeping in past 7 AM during holidays was simply not an option. My father believed that waking up early made the day feel longer. Our mornings were filled with runs and bodyweight exercises, which not only built my physical strength but also instilled a lifelong love for fitness.

Even now, I remain active and agile, often surprising those around me with my energy levels and enthusiasm for physical activity. My father's insistence on a disciplined routine laid the groundwork for self-control and determination.

Section 1.6: The Lesson in Independence

Upon entering college, I was known for my rebellious spirit. However, when I repeatedly got into trouble, my father issued a stern ultimatum: "After this, you’re on your own." He held true to his word, leading me to face the consequences of my actions.

When I was expelled from the hostel for poor behavior, I was forced to confront the reality of my choices. This experience taught me accountability and integrity in a way that no lecture ever could.

In retrospect, my father’s tough love was a gift. He believed in my potential and pushed me to grow, even when it was uncomfortable. As Jim Valvano said, if you recognize this truth, consider yourself fortunate.

My father’s lessons on resilience and self-discipline have left a lasting impact on my life, helping me to navigate challenges with confidence and grace.
