Ditch the Morning Routine: Discover a Better Approach Today

Chapter 1: Rethinking Morning Rituals
For years, the morning routine has been viewed as a cornerstone of creativity and productivity. Although I acknowledge the benefits it can provide, I believe we've taken this concept to an extreme, often using it as an excuse to avoid tackling important tasks.
As a busy mother of three young children juggling a demanding job in a fast-paced environment, I found myself lacking the time for an elaborate morning ritual. Initially, I aimed to adopt a structured routine at the beginning of the year. However, after three weeks of trying, I felt stressed and unfulfilled, leading me to abandon the idea altogether.
Here’s my alternative approach:
Start the Routine the Night Before
Waking up at 5 a.m. and then pondering what to do next is unproductive. Instead, plan your morning the night before. Decide on your first task, what book you'll read, the duration, and ensure your workout clothes are ready. By organizing everything in advance, you can hit the ground running when your alarm goes off.
Get Up and Get to Work!
As soon as I wake up, I dive into my chosen task. I like to accomplish one fulfilling activity early in the day. For me, that means writing. I prepare an article the night prior, and upon waking, I write and publish it. This accomplishment allows me to transition to exercise or household chores without feeling overwhelmed when my family begins to stir and requires my attention.
Maximize Your Downtime
Make the most of your available time. Who says your productivity window is limited to the early morning? Why not fit in your workout between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. instead of getting lost in social media or binge-watching shows? Consider shortening your lunch break to brainstorm article ideas for the upcoming days. There are countless pockets of time throughout the day that can be utilized more effectively. Seize control of your schedule and leverage it to your advantage.
While morning routines can be beneficial, they can also become so ritualized that they lose their effectiveness. The goal of waking up early should be to create positive outcomes. If your only achievement is completing a morning routine that doesn't contribute to your objectives, it may be time to reconsider its value. Feel free to modify it, or like me, eliminate it entirely!
