Chapter 1: The First Punishment

Katie strode through the corridors in quietude alongside her new roommate, Pen. Earlier that morning, she had familiarized herself with the rules and guidelines provided. One particular regulation mandated silence in the hallways unless addressed by a staff member. Suppressing her anxiety and annoyance, Katie followed Pen to their first class of the day.

"Is there a reason you're gazing out the window, Miss Shaw?"

"Uh… no, Sir." Katie's throat tightened. Her mind had wandered briefly during the class's discussion on the Civil War.

"Please see me after class." The tone of that directive sent a chill down her spine, and as she exchanged glances with Pen from across the room, Katie felt her palms grow clammy.

"You wanted to speak with me, Sir?" Katie approached her History teacher, Mr. Jackson, feeling a sense of dread clawing at her insides.

"When I’m teaching, Miss Shaw, I expect my students to focus. Due to your inattentiveness, you’ll be doing a wall sit. Let’s make it 30 minutes."

Katie stood there, speechless and bewildered, but dutifully moved towards the wall near the teacher's desk and lowered herself to the ground with her back pressed against it. When her gaze met Mr. Jackson's, she noticed a smirk on his face.

"I see I need to clarify. Stand up with your back against the wall, arms at your sides. Now, position your feet shoulder-width apart and slide down as if an invisible chair is supporting you."

Following his instructions, Katie descended against the wall until she reached the point where the imaginary chair would be. Content, Mr. Jackson returned to his desk, engrossed in grading papers.
