Chapter 1: My Journey in Competitive Grappling
In November 2021, I participated in the ADCC Trials, a prestigious submission grappling competition featuring over 150 competitors, and unfortunately, I was eliminated in the second round. This was the largest tournament I had faced, and my performance fell short of my expectations.
Fast forward to April 2022, just five months later, I returned to the Trials, which had grown even more competitive with over 250 athletes. Remarkably, I secured 4th place, defeating three of the top 16 seeds along the way. Many who saw my results were left questioning, "Who is this competitor and where did he come from?" However, I was not surprised, as I had dedicated those five months to intense training and improvement.
Here are ten key habits that enabled me to transform from an early-round exit to a top contender in just six months. I can only imagine the progress I might make when I attempt the ADCC again in two years.

I have developed a fascination with studying the habits and behaviors of elite athletes and successful writers. This analysis has allowed me to adopt their practices, making them feel like second nature over time. The more you emulate high achievers, the quicker you'll find yourself among them.

While pushing your physical limits every day isn't necessary, experiencing failure regularly is essential. Learning to cope with setbacks fosters resilience, allowing you to view failure not as a measure of your worth but as a stepping stone toward growth. This shift in perspective can eliminate the anxiety associated with failure, enhancing your performance and preparation.
Subsection 1.2.1: The Power of Specialization
In Jiu-Jitsu, practitioners focus on two main forms: gi and no-gi. After my initial disappointment at the ADCC Trials, I decided to specialize in no-gi training, despite some resistance from friends and family. This decision allowed me to sharpen my focus and elevate my discipline. As David Allen wisely noted, "You can be anything, but you can’t be everything."
Section 1.3: Mastering Micro-Drilling
I firmly believe in the effectiveness of micro-drilling—repeatedly practicing a specific technique in isolation. This method enhances muscle memory with minimal risk of burnout or injury. Whether in sports or writing, this focused practice can elevate your skills from adequate to exceptional.

Section 2.1: Cultivating Mindfulness
While it may not be glamorous, achieving world-class results often requires a grounded approach. Anxiety can undermine potential, causing athletes to falter before they even compete. Many aspiring writers struggle to publish due to fear of judgment. Engaging in mental training and meditation can help clear limiting beliefs and unlock your true capabilities.
Section 2.2: The Art of Visualization
Visualization is a critical tool that many overlook. Competitors who mentally rehearse their performances often handle pressure better, acting as if they've already succeeded. When you're comfortable in high-stakes moments, your hard work and training can shine through.
Section 2.3: The Importance of Expression
Writing serves as my emotional outlet, helping me process anxiety and frustrations. By articulating my thoughts, I can navigate life without being overwhelmed by negative emotions. This practice allows me to adopt a "winner's mindset," enabling me to manage adversity more effectively.

I embrace sacrifice as a core habit. Between my two attempts at the ADCC Trials, I often forwent social outings and unhealthy indulgences to focus on my goals. My diet became nearly perfect, and I even sacrificed potential relationships to prioritize my training. This intense commitment was pivotal for my rapid advancement.
Chapter 3: Learning from the Best
A few months prior to my second attempt at the ADCC Trials, I traveled to Austin, Texas, to train with some of the top no-gi grapplers globally. I also attended a class led by John Danaher, a highly respected Jiu-Jitsu coach. This experience provided me with a new perspective on my sport and fueled my motivation to excel.
Section 3.1: Prioritizing Health
Whether striving to be a world-class athlete, writer, or any other pursuit, mastering optimal health is crucial. My initial struggles in the ADCC Trials were partly due to injuries. In my second attempt, however, I was in peak physical condition, which made all the difference in my performance.
