Overcoming Self-Doubt: 5 Common Limiting Thoughts to Conquer
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Limiting Thoughts
It's astonishing how often we can obstruct our own progress. Thoughts that suggest we can't, shouldn't, or don't deserve certain things can be pervasive. Your inner voice can be quite critical, often conveying messages that are counterproductive.
Often, we become our harshest critics. Negative beliefs give rise to thoughts that attempt to keep us in check: "Would you even try that?" "You can't possibly succeed." "What makes you think you can change anything?" "Just be quiet; you don't know enough."
While there is a protective instinct behind these thoughts, aimed at shielding us from potential discomfort when we consider stepping outside our comfort zone, this instinct can become detrimental. The intent to safeguard yourself is understandable, but such limiting thoughts can impede your development and enjoyment of life.
In reality, these limiting beliefs can usually be categorized into five core thoughts. Whether you are a business professional, healing from a breakup, a busy parent, or a social media influencer, these thoughts frequently circulate in our minds:
- I am not good enough/pretty enough/smart enough/experienced enough/talented enough.
- I always do it this way.
- I can't change this.
- Others will judge me.
- My opinion doesn't count.
It's unfortunate that we let these obstructive thoughts weigh us down. It's much healthier and more fulfilling to recognize them for what they are: mere thoughts. They do not define who you are, nor do they provide sound guidance; instead, they serve only to restrict your potential to live fully.
When your inner critic speaks, take a moment to listen to your self-talk. How harsh are your words? Would you ever say such things to someone else? Likely not. Instead, engage in a dialogue with yourself and discover alternative perspectives.
Alongside that inner critic, there is likely a supportive voice within you that encourages you to believe in yourself, embrace your beauty, recognize your capacity for change, and value your unique viewpoint. How uplifting and motivating is that?
Ultimately, the decision is yours: which voice will you heed? Which advisor will you trust? You have the power to determine how much weight you give to those limiting thoughts.
