Harnessing Habit Stacking for Effective Routines and Growth

Chapter 1: The Power of Routines
Routines can be incredibly powerful tools in our lives. However, they often come with the risk of indulgence.
"If I have a little, I'll end up overindulging," I admitted without hesitation during a lively discussion.
When challenged about my competitive nature, I found myself in a light-hearted debate about a future pizza-eating contest. My friend insisted that my strengths lay elsewhere, and that a competition like this was out of character for me. But another athlete came to my defense, understanding that my structured habits and rituals stem from a deeper need to maintain control, not just a display of strength.
Weakness and failure are intertwined. The guilt of knowing I could have succeeded but didn’t weighs heavily on me.
Some argue that this mindset is not a healthy way to live, and I understand their concerns. However, when I suggest they try it for themselves, they often shy away, never knowing the difference between feeling in control and being engulfed in chaos.
Section 1.1: The Journey of New Routines
Starting new routines can seem daunting and even absurd at first. Yet, with time, one realizes there’s no ultimate destination; it’s the journey that holds value.
"Nothing exists but the journey itself," as Nikos Kazantzakis famously said.
It’s akin to the movie "Inception," where dreams intertwine; this concept applies to stacking habits within our daily lives—building one discipline on top of another.
Subsection 1.1.1: Implementing Habit Stacking
As James Clear states, "To effectively build a new habit, link it to an existing one in your daily routine."
For instance, I incorporate breath work into my workout sessions. My evening routine seamlessly includes taking supplements, flossing, brushing my teeth, and preparing meals for the next day.
These small, strategic additions don’t burden my day; instead, they help me avoid potential pitfalls—both those I can see and those that remain hidden.
Section 1.2: Addressing Discomfort
Even the strongest individuals can hesitate when faced with discomfort. It’s a natural reaction to pain, which we can often train ourselves to manage. Yet, unexpected aches can throw us off balance.
Even the slightest discomfort, often as small as a grain of sand, can impact our performance. If neglected, these minor issues can escalate into significant problems.
Instead of simply coping, I encourage you to view the video below and consider experimenting with habit stacking.
