Goals I Aspire to Achieve in 2023: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Chapter 1: Setting Yearly Goals for the First Time

Typically, I shy away from setting goals, preferring to let life unfold naturally. The fear of feeling like a failure if I don’t meet my goals often holds me back, even though I recognize that this perception is misguided. Recently, I found inspiration from Nancy Blackman's writing prompt, which encouraged me to outline a few aspirations for 2023.

In the best-case scenario, this exercise will help me clarify and concentrate my efforts, while in the worst case, I may realize that some goals aren't feasible right now and either postpone them or let them go entirely.

Here are my aspirations for the year:

  1. Limit Smartphone Usage

    In 2022, I lost the battle against my iPhone's distractions. Despite knowing I should reduce my screen time, I often succumbed to compulsive usage, particularly as a parent of a toddler. This year, I am committed to cultivating healthier habits with my digital devices.

  2. Revisit Influential Books

    Having read over 100 books for two years in a row, I've realized that it's time to revisit those that truly impacted me. While I still have new titles on my reading list, focusing on actionable insights from past favorites will be a priority.

  3. Study the Bhagavad Gita

    The teachings of Krishna resonate with me deeply, even after 5,000 years. My previous studies through Chinmaya International Foundation have shown me that each reading brings new insights, and I aim to explore the Bhagavad Gita thoroughly this year.

  4. Establish a Healthy Sleep Routine

    Sleep has always been a challenge for me. After overcoming childhood anxiety and developing a good sleep routine during my exams, I recognize the importance of prioritizing sleep once again, as it will enhance all areas of my life.

  5. Practice Mindful Work Habits

    Distractions often hinder my productivity. Inspired by Chris Bailey's "Hyperfocus," I aim to maintain full attention on my tasks to enhance both my output and personal satisfaction.

  6. Adopt Healthier Eating Habits

    Food is crucial for well-being. I’ve developed unhealthy eating patterns, and this year, I'm determined to replace junk food with fruits and vegetables, cut out sugar, and make healthier snack choices.

  7. Enhance My Writing Skills

    Writing has been a powerful tool for clarifying my thoughts. I intend to work on specific writing techniques to improve my craft and provide greater value to my readers.

  8. Learn Machine Learning

    With the rise of artificial intelligence, I recognize the need to understand machine learning. This year, I am committed to acquiring this essential skill.

  9. Advance My Sanskrit Proficiency

    My desire to read Indian scriptures in their original language has led me to start learning Sanskrit multiple times. This year, I plan to pursue it earnestly, including preparing for an exam in July to maintain momentum.

  10. Incorporate Yoga into My Routine

    Yoga has had a remarkable effect on my health, and I want to make it a consistent part of my life again. February 2023 marks my commitment to restarting my daily practice.

The Road Ahead

If I manage to achieve even five of these goals, I will consider it a success. I've reflected on my tendencies to work in bursts, so I plan to focus on a few skills at a time and adjust my approach based on my progress.

While I could have narrowed my goals down to five, I've made initial strides in all ten areas. I will assess which ones resonate most with me as I move forward. Should I succeed, that would be fantastic; if I falter, I will simply return to where I began.
