Finding Fulfillment Beyond the Illusion of Higher Purpose

Written on

Chapter 1: The Myth of Mondays and Higher Purpose

Mondays often symbolize a fresh start, a time to embark on the ongoing journey of life after a weekend break. The beginning of the year, especially, feels ripe with potential and renewed commitment to excellence. However, the reality is that Mondays can be misleading. The idea of becoming a "better you" is frequently an illusion crafted by the ego.

Goals versus Purpose

You can have ambitions, and that's perfectly normal. For instance, a shark's goal is to hunt and consume, a bear aims to hibernate, and humans may seek to better the environment, even as they inadvertently harm it. This shared goal transcends political divides; we all contribute to it in one way or another.

Yet, it's essential to differentiate between a goal and a purpose. Often, the term "higher purpose" accompanies this notion, harking back to when we believed in celestial beings dictating our lives. The idea of a "lower purpose" rarely surfaces. It's as if we assume that purpose must always be lofty and unattainable. In reality, we have the freedom to define our life's meaning without the oversight of some distant deity.

Embracing a Lower Purpose

In many cases, what we label a "higher purpose" is merely a disguise for our ego, which can lead to anxiety and unhappiness. If peace is what you seek, consider adopting a lower purpose instead. Here are a few of mine:

  • To savor moments of joy and experience bliss regularly.
  • To advocate for a post-ego lifestyle as a new way of living.
  • To cleanse my mind of misleading beliefs that my ego holds any significance.

The Perils of Pursuing a Higher Purpose

Life is fleeting. Do you wish to spend it in conflict with others in the name of a higher calling? Often, when someone obstructs your lofty ambitions, it leads to confrontations. Consider the example of Mel Gibson, who left his wife for someone who shared his fervor for a Latin-speaking church, masking his decision as a spiritual quest rather than a personal one. This behavior exemplifies how a supposed higher purpose can lead to selfish actions.

The Dangerous Illusion of Higher Purposes

The Catholic Church, in its zeal for its higher mission, allowed horrendous acts of abuse to persist among its ranks, believing that protecting its image was of utmost importance. Similarly, historical figures like Stalin and the Nazis pursued their versions of utopia, disregarding the suffering they inflicted. These are stark reminders of how pursuing a higher purpose can lead to moral failings.

Reevaluating American Values

In American culture, a myth has emerged suggesting that self-promotion is a noble pursuit, often termed "success." This narrative, perpetuated by figures like Horatio Alger, overlooks the systemic advantages that enable such success. Many young people today chase the idea of achievement as a means of validating their worth, leading to toxic competitiveness and depression when faced with rejection.

If you abandon the notion of a higher purpose, one significant benefit arises: relief. The relentless pressure to achieve dissipates, allowing for genuine enjoyment of life.

The Importance of Community and Support

If you find yourself struggling financially, remember that seeking public assistance is not a failure. It's a resource available to many, and you may already rely on various forms of support without realizing it. The higher purpose many chase often revolves around avoiding poverty, yet in the end, it leads to a hollow existence.

Reclaiming Joy Through Play

Instead of living to work, consider shifting your focus to enjoying life. In many parts of the world, work-life balance is prioritized, emphasizing the joy in living rather than merely existing to fulfill job roles. Rediscover playfulness; it’s essential for well-being. Engage in lighthearted interactions and embrace the humor of existence.

Join the Playful Movement

Imagine a community dedicated to the joy of existence, free from the burdens of ego. This is what the post-ego club represents—a group where individuals connect and celebrate life without pretense.
