# The Essence of Being: How Intention Shapes Our Creations
Written on
Chapter 1: The Meaning Behind Our Actions
During my visit to Noah's Cupboard in Weston, Missouri, I had the pleasure of dining with Chef Nick Martinkovic. As I savored the pierogi, I exclaimed, "Chef, this meal tastes like it's already been prayed over!" The first bite brought forth a flavor that was both familiar and ineffable. It dawned on me that this dish was enriched with intention and prayer.
Chef Nick responded with a knowing smile, affirming my sentiment. This experience deepened my belief that the motivations behind our actions often outweigh the actions themselves. It’s not merely about what we do, but why we do it. The energy we channel into our creations—be it innocence, anger, or love—imbues them with a unique essence.
To illustrate this point, consider the simple act of making a sandwich. Whether you're doing so in a high-pressure environment, for a joyous family gathering, or during a sacred ritual, the fundamental action remains the same. However, the underlying motivation shapes the outcome. This is precisely why replicating Grandma's sandwiches never quite captures the original essence; her secret ingredient was the love she infused into every bite.
Section 1.1: The Concept of First Principles
I have extensively discussed a problem-solving approach known as first principle thinking. This method involves deconstructing complex ideas into their simplest components and then reconstructing them anew. This process reflects our innate curiosity to grasp the core of any subject. Children exemplify this inherent curiosity by constantly questioning the world around them: Why is the sky blue? What is a president? Their innocent inquiries help them understand the foundational elements of life.
Imagine a set of Russian nesting dolls, each encased within the other. To reveal the entire set, we meticulously remove the outer layers until we reach the smallest doll at the center. This is a natural practice employed by children, allowing them to navigate life with greater understanding. Each unveiled layer is crucial for grasping the connections and interdependencies that exist in our world.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Significance of Self in Experience
Section 1.2: The Influence of Our State of Being
It’s essential to recognize why first principle thinking matters in this context. The most significant factor shaping your experiences is you. As the central figure in your narrative, your state of being profoundly impacts everything you create or engage with—be it an object, a conversation, or a relationship. Whether you're crafting pierogi or leading a team, your essence influences everyone involved, including yourself.
Chapter 2: Transformational Insights
Upon realizing this, I experienced a shift in my perspective. I found myself in a state of profound presence that became easily accessible. I recognized my own value, and aligning my state of being with what resonated with me became paramount. I began to notice the positive effects this alignment had on me and those around me. Embracing sincerity, intention, and a childlike innocence reconnected me with my roots and invited deeper connections with others.
I encourage you to reflect on the following questions:
- What is your default state of being? Are you typically pessimistic, optimistic, or something else?
- What motivates your actions, and how does this reflect in your creations?
Your essence shapes what you create.
I've never inquired of Chef Nick why he prays over his food. I wonder if it's for himself, for the meal, or for the diners. Regardless, he pours his heart and soul into every dish, making each one meaningful and unforgettable.
