Embracing Photography: A Journey from Writing to Capturing Moments

Chapter 1: A Passion for Photography
Photography has always held a special place in my heart. As a child, I would eagerly ask my mother if I could snap a photo with her small Kodak camera, the one that had a row of flash bulbs that could temporarily blind anyone in its path. Though it may seem a little mischievous, it was all in good fun—especially since I often found myself on the receiving end of those flashes.
As I grew older, my father transitioned to capturing images that were later turned into slides. He had a little projector that showcased our photos on a small screen, a novelty that still makes me smile. Eventually, he upgraded to a video camera, one that resembled the tech from Back to the Future. Watching ourselves on video was a source of joy for us.
Fast forward to today, where such powerful technology fits in our pockets. Over the years, I've taken countless memorable photos with my smartphones, making the best of what I had for about fifteen years.
One of my cherished photos was taken during a particularly emotional day at a loved one's funeral, featuring Mai and her grandnephew. And then there are the countless selfies! Many people have learned photography through social media, and I fondly remember those moments with my children as they grew.
I've been the dad who enjoys capturing these moments, and I've taken plenty of selfies with my kids. Our trips to the Oregon Coast in 2022 and 2023 were particularly inspiring; the beauty of the ocean and the artistic vibe of Cannon Beach left a lasting impression on me. I stumbled upon a gallery filled with stunning high-resolution photographs, which reignited a dream I had long postponed: to delve deeper into photography.
Having written on Medium for six months, I envisioned how a quality camera could enhance my articles. The idea of documenting my journey into photography excited me, but it took time to build a following and create engaging content. I decided to treat myself to a nice camera once I hit a specific milestone.
Growing up with financial struggles made it hard to justify spending on myself. My family's needs always came first, and the last significant purchase I made for myself was a pair of vintage Air Jordans.
While I loved those shoes, I had to sell them during tough times. Buying a new camera came with mixed emotions. Despite knowing I deserved it, I struggled to justify the expense. Thankfully, my wife encouraged me to go for it, reminding me that after talking about photography for over a year, it was finally time to take the plunge, even if it was just before Christmas.
After much consideration, I knew I wanted to photograph nature, wildlife, and even celestial events. My research led me to the Nikon COOLPIX P1000, which, although not the highest in megapixels, offered an incredible zoom feature within my budget.
For instance, I captured this stunning image of the full moon:
Despite my back pain that day, I managed to get my camera and set up a shot, utilizing a chair to steady my aim. The zoom capabilities of my camera have left me in awe, allowing me to glimpse celestial bodies like Jupiter and Saturn, even if they aren't as clear as the moon.
When it comes to wildlife photography, I can't wait to explore and capture images of animals from afar. So far, I've snapped a few birds, a curious squirrel, and even our cat Mooch.
I find great joy in photographing animals outdoors. The last picture, which appears to show a little fox, is actually our Libby exploring the snow.
To fully master my new camera, I plan to watch some tutorials. So far, experimenting with it has been incredibly enjoyable. This new hobby is not only great for me but also complements my writing, nurturing my creative side. It encourages me to step outside, even during a snowstorm.
This peaceful shot of a small frozen bridge was taken during a recent snowfall. Even as a beginner, I can see why photography can become an all-consuming passion. I’ve been looking into filters for sun photography as my next purchase.
Whether it becomes a delightful hobby or something more, I wholeheartedly welcome this new adventure. I cherish the chance to do something for myself. As I grow older, expressing myself through writing and photography becomes increasingly fulfilling.
Feed your soul. Explore new interests you've been postponing. Life is short, and it's worth your time and investment. &:^)
