Embracing Multiple Passions for a Fulfilling Career Journey

The Case for Multiple Passions

What do you aspire to become in the future? The conventional pathway suggests going to school, landing a job, and climbing the corporate ladder. This idea has been instilled in us from a young age. From an early age, we are bombarded with the question of our future careers, and it’s expected that we have a solid answer. As you transition to college, the pressure to choose a single career path amplifies. It’s as if society has implanted a notion that the sooner you decide, the better.

The Challenge of Career Exclusivity

When did someone first inquire about your career ambitions? What dreams did you have back then? While experts often advocate for focusing on one career path to achieve mastery, I find myself questioning whether this is truly the best approach for everyone. Some individuals thrive in their chosen fields, but is this the universal formula for success?

Growing Up with Diverse Interests

I write, although I wouldn’t label myself a writer at this moment. Yet, I have the ambition to be one in the future. Does this diminish my identity as a designer or illustrator? Society might suggest so, but I’ve always nurtured a variety of interests since childhood. This natural curiosity often indicates a vibrant spirit that can navigate life with excitement.

As a child, I was captivated by short poems, often reflecting on my family dynamics. My early attempts at writing hinted at a future in journalism or perhaps simply a need for an outlet to express my thoughts. The blank page became my confidant: "Dear paper, I am a witness to my experiences, and I appreciate your silent understanding."

I enjoyed merging my sketches with illustrations from children’s books. My father remarked that this was typical for kids, so I didn’t view it as anything special. Singing was another passion, though my vocal skills didn't quite meet expectations. Thus, I felt compelled to take my career seriously. Now, I identify as a curious freelance graphic designer, integrating illustration into my life.

For a time, I hoped to reconnect with writing. I believe that writing enriches the creative process. So here I am, embracing the act of writing. Does this make me any less of a designer?

What is Your Ikigai?

Ikigai (????, meaning 'a reason for being') is a Japanese concept that signifies what gives someone a sense of purpose. This could manifest in activities such as gardening, coding for an AI application, or cooking for loved ones. Lacking a singular passion doesn’t diminish your ability to find fulfillment.

Should we be searching for that one ultimate passion in our careers? Or is it more beneficial to explore various paths and experiences? You might not need to adhere to a singular career focus to become your best self. Begin exploring, and allow your true self to emerge.

Adapting to Change

With the rapid advancements in technology and AI, it's becoming essential to embrace a variety of professional roles. The future remains uncertain, and the jobs we know may evolve or disappear. As noted by career coach Caroline Castrillon in Forbes, “Lifetime employment at a single job is largely a thing of the past.” Attitudes toward non-linear career paths are shifting.

Creative and analytical thinking are increasingly valuable skills. Individuals may need to adopt a lifelong learning mindset, continually rediscovering and reinventing themselves to flourish in this new era. A great starting point could be some introspection, armed with a blank sheet of paper.

Embrace a Multifaceted Journey

Pursue what you love, but prioritize your happiness. Don’t let external pressures dictate how you express yourself. How many people truly find joy in their work? Why do we sometimes cease to explore different possibilities? What leads us to settle?

I’ve recognized the interconnectedness of my experiences. My diverse background has enriched my perspective, illustrating how writing enhances my design work. My journalism background equips me to approach projects with a problem-solving mindset, while my illustration skills add versatility to my visual style. My early education in computer science simplifies my data visualization and UX/UI tasks.

The Benefits of Writing for Design

Writing is a practice I aim to cultivate. The act of putting pen to paper can be meditative, offering a sense of liberation and emotional release.

As a novice, I embrace writing free from the constraints of deadlines or notifications. Being present and jotting down my thoughts brings me joy. It serves as a pathway to self-discovery.

Writing enhances my abilities in the following ways:

  • Provides focus and clarity to articulate my thoughts.
  • Improves my communication skills.
  • Helps in crafting concise briefs, strategies, and design processes.
  • Acts as a supportive companion in my visual endeavors.
  • Offers new perspectives for problem-solving.
  • Often leads to personal projects and self-reflection.
  • Facilitates deeper self-understanding, which is a valid reason to engage in it.

In conclusion, being a designer who embraces multiple disciplines enriches my professional journey and authenticity. Writing, in particular, allows me to articulate my thoughts and refine my design capabilities, providing a space for reflection and greater fulfillment.

Where are you in your professional journey? Are you on a well-defined path, or are you exploring new avenues?
