It’s a glorious spring morning, and the sunlight pours in as the birds chirp their cheerful greetings. My heart brims with gratitude, my thoughts are organized, and I feel empowered to take on whatever comes my way. I find solace in the tranquility around me, often longing for such stillness. Every day begins with a familiar routine: I wake, brew my coffee, and dedicate the first hour to prayer, meditation, and journaling. This practice has been a conscious part of my life for the past three years.

Throughout this time, I have cultivated the ability to discover joy even in sorrow and find calm amidst chaos. I nurture this practice because life comprises a blend of joyful and painful moments. Our true character emerges when we navigate through grief, disappointment, and uncertainty.

Reflecting on my past, I realize I wasn’t always this way. As a child, I faced conflicts with difficulty. Anxiety often drove me to retreat during arguments or when tensions escalated. In the kitchen of my childhood home, I would hide in the coat closet whenever my parents fought. Growing up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the 1980s—a neighborhood marked by poverty and diversity—brought its own challenges. The constant noise and chaos shaped my early experiences, and I learned to develop a tough exterior for protection.

The vibrant streets echoed with music from boom boxes, breakdancers showcased their skills on cardboard, and older gentlemen played dominoes outside local bodegas. I was enveloped by life’s sounds, but as I matured, I yearned for silence. I sought moments of stillness, intentionally creating time to reconnect with myself and understand who I truly am, away from the world’s distractions.

In my home office, I crafted a personal sanctuary. Each day, I reserve time to be with myself and connect with God because self-care is essential. We must nourish ourselves to share our abundance with others; pouring from an empty cup is not sustainable. Yet, many people find themselves in this predicament, giving endlessly and neglecting their own needs.

Unraveling our true selves can be challenging when society dictates how we should live and what brings happiness. We often chase degrees, possessions, and status, only to find ourselves feeling unfulfilled and searching for meaning.

It wasn't until I consciously distanced myself from societal demands that I began to identify what genuinely matters to me. I cherish peaceful moments in nature, the sun warming my skin, and hearty laughter. I find joy in simple pleasures like gazing at the moon, sipping wine, diving into a good book, or embracing the quiet of doing nothing. These experiences help me reconnect with the essence of who I was before external expectations took over.

The journey toward becoming my authentic self has been transformative. I’ve learned that true happiness doesn’t lie outside of me; it’s an internal discovery. I no longer seek validation from others or chase societal approval. Each day, I uncover new facets of my identity, fueling my excitement for personal growth and evolution.

Recently, I celebrated my 46th birthday, and I’ve mastered the art of honoring myself at every stage of my journey. I’ve come to understand that my presence enriches any space I occupy. I love myself enough to set boundaries: I won’t settle for less than I deserve, allow mistreatment, or let my past dictate my future. I refuse to accept anything that doesn’t align with my highest self. My hope for you is to embark on a similar path of self-love and care—you deserve it more than anyone.
