Title: Embracing Authenticity: Why Being True to Yourself Matters

Written on

Chapter 1: The Value of Authenticity in Writing

Recently, I had an interesting discussion with another writer who described my writing style as "informal." I must admit, that comment ruffled my feathers a bit. Yes, my ego took a hit, and it’s worth noting that sometimes our pride can get in the way of constructive feedback.

Apologies to you, Wesley van Peer; my ego was just eager to express itself.

I wasn't aware that writing must adhere to rigid standards. My style—often referred to as my "brand"—is casual, relaxed, and friendly, akin to sharing a cup of coffee or a drink with a friend.

In my earlier career, I was tasked with drafting product specifications for commercial projects. The process was tedious and highly structured, constrained by strict guidelines. Honestly, it felt lifeless—perfect for AI, but not for me.

Fast forward nearly thirty years, and I found myself drawn to the realm of creative writing. I quickly decided to express myself as I naturally speak, and I’ve never looked back. What you read from me is simply who I am; there’s no pretense involved.

I can’t fathom how someone might portray one persona in writing while presenting an entirely different self in person. To me, that seems disingenuous.

This leads me to a crucial realization: you can’t craft content that resonates with everyone. Our diverse preferences will always shape our responses.

Many of you have likely heard the phrase, “That’s not my cup of tea.” I often encounter this sentiment when discussing various authors' works, and that's perfectly acceptable.

I don’t go to great lengths to dress up my writing, nor should you feel compelled to change your style. Be authentic; express yourself freely, whether that means dressing casually or even going without clothes!

To wrap things up, let’s all practice a little mantra for those who want you to alter your approach: “It’s my way or the highway!” Right, Dalton? Just a little humor there.

Thank you, friends! 🙏
