Conversations with Your Dog: Exploring the Depths of Existence

Chapter 1: Philosophical Musings with Your Pet
Have you ever engaged your pets in conversations about the profound mysteries of existence? If you haven't, you might be overlooking a significant aspect of pet ownership. No, I don’t indulge in mind-altering substances; I simply have a unique perspective. I often ask my golden retriever, whom I affectionately call Sammy, whether he thinks there's anything beyond the tangible reality he experiences daily. I instruct him to shake if he believes in more than what meets the eye and to give me a blank stare if he thinks otherwise.
It's easy to understand my insistence on these discussions when I consider how Sammy seems to embrace a naturalistic worldview. He appears disinterested in contemplating anything beyond his leash, the local park, his food bowl, or the mailman, whose enticing left leg seems to captivate him. One could say his adherence to this outlook is rather dogmatic…
As I strive to broaden his perspective, progress has been slow. Just the other day, our conversation veered into the Kalam Cosmological Argument. I found myself shaking Sammy in exasperation, declaring, “Don’t you see, Sammy?! Everything that comes into existence must have a cause, and clearly, the universe began to exist. Otherwise, we’d have an infinite series of past events or the universe emerging from nothing—both of which are absurd!”
In response, he lay down and rested his head on the carpet. I think it’s safe to say I emerged victorious in that debate, though I don’t mean to boast.
I suspect that many animals, with their simpler forms of consciousness, might share Sammy’s naturalistic beliefs. One can't blame them; the physical world is all they comprehend. It’s entirely possible that they are correct. Perhaps my more advanced cognitive abilities lead me to overanalyze the situation.
This brings me to an intriguing notion. In many elite intellectual discussions, it's often taken for granted that naturalism is the default rational viewpoint. To entertain the idea of a reality beyond the physical is frequently dismissed as naive—an intellectual compromise in favor of emotional comfort.
This perspective strikes me as ironic. Lower life forms adhere to a naturalistic viewpoint simply because they cannot conceive of anything else. In contrast, humans have historically theorized about a supernatural realm precisely because our cognitive abilities allow us to do so. It’s not merely a matter of liking the idea; it often stems from grappling with metaphysical inquiries, such as “Why is there something rather than nothing?” or “Why do I yearn for meaning and feel that my actions may hold objective moral weight?”
I have considered refraining from such inquiries. Perhaps they are unresolvable, or perhaps they arise from an overly sensitive evolutionary instinct. Yet, to dismiss my belief based solely on its origin would be to commit the genetic fallacy. A belief should be evaluated on its own merits, irrespective of its source. For example, if Adolf Hitler had been the first to discover gravity, objects would still fall when released.
I remain undecided on whether naturalism is the correct path or if I should continue exploring my theistic inclinations.
If God exists, then perhaps the universe would align more coherently with my inquisitive mind. However, if He does not exist, and that leads me towards naturalism, at least my discussions with Sammy would become less complex.
Note: Although I have enjoyed the companionship of golden retrievers throughout my life, I currently do not have one named Sammy. This narrative is fictional and serves illustrative purposes. Additionally, no dogs were harmed in the contemplation of life's profound questions.
