Call Recording: A Long-Awaited Feature
The much-anticipated call recording capability has finally made its debut on the iPhone with the release of the iOS 18.1 update. This feature has been notably absent from previous versions, but it is now available, though it comes with some important limitations.
In this guide, we will explain the steps to record calls on your iPhone and how to access call transcripts.
Recording Calls on Your iPhone
With iOS 18.1, call recording is now integrated into the Apple Intelligence features. If you want to try this out, you can either install the iOS 18.1 beta version or wait for the official release in October.
- Start by navigating to the call screen on your iPhone. You'll notice a call recording button located in the upper-left corner.
- Tap on this button, and a notification will appear indicating that recording will commence in three seconds, accompanied by a message stating that the call is being recorded.
- Once the recording begins, a prompt will appear suggesting you take notes regarding the call. This is because all recordings are saved in the Notes app. You can choose to view the note or dismiss it for the moment.
- To end the recording, press the recording button again in the center of the screen. Alternatively, you can simply hang up, which will also save the recording.
Accessing Your Recorded Calls and Transcripts
To find your recorded calls, open the Apple Notes app. A new folder labeled "Call Recordings" will be available at the top. Each recorded call generates a new note that contains both the audio file and a transcript.
Apple employs AI to generate a brief summary of your call, displayed at the bottom of the note. You can tap the play button to listen to the recording. By tapping anywhere on the recording widget, you can access the call transcript, and a summary button will be present for a more detailed overview of the conversation.
It's worth noting that Apple differentiates between speakers during the call, although the effectiveness of this feature in multi-party conversations remains to be seen. I will explore this in future articles.
Considerations and Final Thoughts on Call Recording
The introduction of a comprehensive call recording feature is a significant enhancement for the iPhone, which I find quite exciting. However, it's essential to remember the limitation mentioned earlier.
This feature is part of the Apple Intelligence suite, which is only available on the latest iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models. Unfortunately, users with older iPhone models will not be able to access this capability, which may encourage them to upgrade to the new iPhone 15 Pro or the upcoming iPhone 16 series.
