A significant characteristic of cancer cells is their alkaline internal environment. This alkaline condition supports the proliferation of cancerous cells, similar to how healthy cells thrive. Therefore, a key objective in cancer treatment is to alter the internal environment of these cells to become more acidic, which can ultimately lead to cell death.

To illustrate this concept, consider the analogy of cancer cells as houses situated in a neighborhood. Within these houses, the atmosphere is alkaline, while the streets outside are acidic. The alkaline setting inside the houses inhibits the activity of a protein that would normally help acidify the environment, allowing the cancer cells to survive and replicate.

If we could prevent damage to the membrane that transports proteins—essential for introducing acid into the cell via lysosome activity—we could shift the cellular environment toward acidity. This change can trigger apoptosis, or programmed cell death, within the tumor.

The Role of Lysosomes

Think of lysosomes as double agents within the cell. Typically, they help eliminate waste, but in this scenario, they hinder the communication needed to activate the proteins that would acidify the tumor environment. By blocking these signals, lysosomes inadvertently allow cancer cells to flourish.

However, once the communication to these proteins is restored, they can modify the internal environment of the tumor, leading to its destruction. Aspirin and certain vitamins can play a crucial role in unblocking these signals, allowing the acidity-inducing proteins to function effectively and initiate the self-destruction of cancer cells.
