Apple Notes in iOS 17: My Intended Usage
With the launch of iOS 17, Apple has introduced several exciting features, including StandBy Mode, customizable stickers, and the long-awaited capability to set multiple timers on the iPhone. The latter has always impressed me, especially since the Apple Watch has offered this functionality for some time.
In addition to these updates, Apple has enhanced the Reminders and Notes applications that are integral to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. For more information on the Apple Reminders update, feel free to check out my previous write-up.
Apple Reminders in iOS 17
When Apple Notes initially debuted, it left much to be desired. However, over the years, Apple has continuously refined it, transforming it into a powerful and practical tool. This year, the introduction of note linking marks a significant advancement—an ability that has been present in apps like Roam, Obsidian, and Craft for some time.
If you're unfamiliar with note linking, it's essentially the capability to connect one note to another. Let me guide you through the process.
How to Link a Note
The process is straightforward in iOS:
- Open or create a note in Apple Notes.
- Tap in an empty space or highlight existing text.
- When the menu appears, tap the right arrow until you find "Add Link."
- In the link box, begin typing the name of an existing note, and suggestions will appear below.
- Select the desired note, and you can customize the display name or use the note's title.
This method is consistent on iPadOS 17 and similar on macOS Sonoma. Keep in mind that you'll need to be using iOS & iPadOS 17 or macOS Sonoma for this feature.
How I Plan to Utilize Note Linking
As someone who frequently takes notes, I often find myself overwhelmed by the extensive lists I accumulate. My intention is to create a centralized dashboard for all notes relevant to current projects, allowing easy access through links without the hassle of searching.
I anticipate discovering even more applications for this feature as I explore its capabilities, and I'm eager to hear how you plan to use it as well. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, and thank you for taking the time to read this.
