Anticipating the Arrival of AirPods Max 2: What to Expect
Written on
Chapter 1: A Long Wait for AirPods Max 2
The anticipation surrounding the AirPods Max 2 has been building for almost two years now. Unlike some other products that I routinely review, such as the MacBook Air—Apple's most coveted laptop—there's a unique fervor for the next iteration of these headphones.
When it comes to headphones, particularly the AirPods Max, it's easy to ignite spirited discussions among fans and critics alike. These high-priced, over-ear noise-cancelling headphones have garnered a polarizing reputation. As they approach their second anniversary, the question remains: when will Apple unveil their successor, and what changes can we expect?
The Initial Reception of AirPods Max
Interestingly, the AirPods Max never received an official launch event. The original plan was to introduce them alongside the iPhone 12 in October 2020. However, due to unforeseen manufacturing issues, they were ultimately revealed through a press release and a new webpage two months later.
Last week, I shared my first impressions of the AirPods Max, which turned out to be my most controversial video to date. I was eager to see what Apple had to offer in the headphone market after previously reviewing various noise-cancelling models from brands like Sony.
Purchasing the AirPods Max was no small decision; at £550, they were the priciest headphones I had ever bought. This hefty price tag set high expectations for their performance, which, unfortunately, were not fully met.
Should You Consider Buying AirPods Max?
My audience's response to my review echoed my sentiments. While many appreciate the build quality, comfort, and sound capabilities of the AirPods Max, frustrations linger around Apple's puzzling design choices, such as the lack of an effective carrying case and the use of a Lightning connector for charging.
The first generation of AirPods Max feels like a "nearly there" product. Apple could have justified their steep price by addressing these design flaws, yet they’ve delivered headphones that can't be easily recommended over competing brands.
Emerging Trends in Noise-Cancelling Headphones
We're entering a compelling phase in the noise-cancelling headphone market. New models are boasting impressive battery life—up to 60 hours in some cases—and the competition is fierce. Consumers are no longer required to spend over £300 to find quality noise-cancelling headphones, as evidenced by my recent review of the soundcore Space Q45.
Apple must consider a price adjustment for the AirPods Max 2. Reducing the price by £100 would place them within a more realistic range, given their commendable design and quality.
Additionally, the need for a functional case is critical. The current slipcase is inadequate and does not provide the necessary protection for such an expensive product.
We also need to see a transition to USB-C charging. The reliance on Lightning is outdated, and it’s frustrating to have to search for a specific cable when the headphones require charging.
Lastly, the absence of an off button remains perplexing. This design choice results in a rapid depletion of battery life, making them less user-friendly compared to other brands. Adding support for lossless audio transmission would also be a welcome enhancement.
What to Expect from Apple
However, let’s temper our expectations—this is Apple, after all. They have a knack for introducing products with minimal changes and diverting attention away from desired features.
It's likely that the AirPods Max 2 will still include a Lightning port, an updated slipcase, and maintain the lack of an off button. Improvements may focus on features like Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos, which have been priorities in recent developments.
The possibility that we might never see AirPods Max 2 is concerning. Similar to the original HomePod, it’s conceivable that the current version may be all we ever receive. This would leave many fans disappointed, as improvements are clearly needed to elevate these headphones in a competitive market.
Conclusion: When Can We Expect AirPods Max 2?
So, when can we realistically expect the AirPods Max 2? I suspect we may have to wait until next year. As 2022 wraps up, Apple will likely shift its focus to new Macs, allowing them more time to refine the AirPods Max for future release.
This delay could be beneficial, giving Apple the opportunity to address the existing issues and deliver a product that truly meets consumer expectations.
